Pelvic Organ Prolapse.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Help For Pelvic Organ Prolapse.

Jen Vardy, our Women’s health Physiotherapist, is able to assess, diagnose, measure and assist in the conservative management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP).

Good conservative management from a Women’s Health physiotherapist includes:

  • Lifestyle advice: appropriate exercise program, diet & weight loss
  • Symptom Management: education on diet, dyspareunia & defecation
  • Pelvic floor muscle retraining
  • Support pessary: a device inserted into the vagina to support the wall and related pelvic organs.

Jen is able to assess and fit pessary supports in-rooms. A pessary is an internal support for POP and can be a low-risk and low-cost alternative to surgery, pelvic mesh or for those awaiting or post-surgery and is always done in consultation with the treating GP or specialist Gynaecologist.

Jen’s practice of pessary fittings adheres to the “Guidelines for the Use of Support Pessaries in the Management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse” document, 2012. A pessary can form part of an overall management plan for POP, and the chance of it being successful increases if sufficient time is given to find the most appropriate option. Physiotherapy consultations allow plenty of time for fitting, instruction, education and follow-up, and incorporates other conservative options that may improve the success of the pessary.
